Our Favorite Light Sources

The next installment in our series of favorite light sources. For these two designers, the best lamp is the A-lamp.

Here’s my project “One Million Lamplications.” A single A-19 lamp can do a million different jobs by using it on different spaces, locations or even by using filters, but at the end of the day it’s the same A-19.

Hands down my most favorite lamp is still the A-lamp aka the upside down pear. This lamp type still drives the market crazy. From incandescent to CFL and from LED to smart-home integration lamps, the design is still based off of the A-lamp shape. It doesn’t seem like this lamp shape is going to leave us.

As a hospitality lighting designer, we always reference the incandescent color temperature and its dimming. The warmth of the color temperature, the flicker free full bodied dimming curve, the ease and headache free integration are always things we try to replicate in design. We tried to replicate with the unreliable CFL, we are trying to replicate with the LED technology, but it’s just not the same!

If we could do all of our hospitality projects with incandescent lamps, why wouldn’t we? Oh right. Ashrae and Energy Code requirements. BOO!
