Governors Island, Master Plan

Governors Island, Master Plan

Governors Island is in the midst of a massive undertaking which includes re-engineering the island for new power and data and replacing all outdoor light fixtures.

We are beyond thrilled to be involved in the development of the new lighting scheme for Governors Island. The island has a rich history and an incredible collection of historic monuments and structures. And the views aren’t bad either.

It was important for us to conduct thorough site visits during the day and evening to understand the site conditions, the experience of walking the island, and what opportunities are available for lighting. We wanted to make sure we were considering not only pathways and roadways, but building entries, porches and monument facades as canvases for lighting.

We have wrapped up our schematic design phase and are excited to work with the team to develop and implement the proposed approaches.

This overall site plan illustrates our proposed layers of lighting, and our concept of utilizing different hues of white light depending on the location and heights of the fixtures.

Utilizing the same height wood utility pole, we are introducing a kit of parts comprised of three pole types.

At points of entry the poles will feature adjustable flood lights in a “moonlight” color temperature with indicator lights that will act as way-finding beacons.

The monuments will be softly up lit and act as lanterns in the landscape.

Warm lighting will be added to porches to give the illusion that someone is home.

Lanterns will be added to each building entry to activate buildings and make them feel welcoming. The incidental light from the entries will also contribute to the adjacent pathways and roadways allowing us to minimize the amount of pole fixtures .
